Spottswoode – Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Tantalizing hints of complexity - but largely closed at this stage
October 7, 2017
This deep purple wine initially presented some mustiness and subtle fruit, with just a hint of oak. Tannin was very present at first along with a fair amount of oak and a healthy earthy tone on the front and middle palates. The wine was well balanced and likely a bit closed at this early stage. Over the duration of our meal (1 - 2 hours), the wine became much more forward, with the intensity of its fruit, musty oak and tannin all increasing over time. At finish, the wine gave some mild hints of fruit and a much more powerful tannin up-front.
This is a very complex wine that is likely to open-up more over the next 1 - 3 years, but even at this early stage the wine provided tantalizing glimpses of depth of flavor, terroir and expressiveness. This wine is hard to find, but can be obtained from the winery at approximately $175/btl for those on the mailing list. As far as I know, I think the mailing list is still open. Locally, some quantities can be found at better wine retailers. Cost $175/btl. Rating CW92+.
