Donum Christian Serafin – Bourgogne Rouge 2012
It Could have Been a Premier Cru! - A Very Well Made Pinot and a Great Value for $50
July 29, 2017
This is the low-end wine from a very well respected producer in Burgundy. As the rest of these tasting notes will attest to, a lower-end wine from a great producer can often be much better than a lower-end wine from a lesser producer. A generic Bourgogne is wine produced from Burgundy vineyards without location-specific titles. Moreover, at $50/btl. this wine represents a great value.
The nose had some very subtle fruit present, which was not overpowering and quite elegant. It also had a dark ruby appearance that only added to its aura of richness. The wine had such a good undercurrent of minerality that permeated the fruit, one could almost taste the limestone in the terroir. Over dinner time, the wine opened up nicely and displayed a big middle palate and a reasonable finish, displaying a good amount of tannin as well. For a Bourgogne, the wine was very well structured, with a great balancing of the fruit, tannin and minerality. It is also clear for those who have had other Serafin wines that the style of Serafin's grand cru wines have also found their way into this lesser wine as well. Cost $50/btl. Rating DN 5.
