This is not an overpowering Sangiovese, but it is a good expression of the terrior and the sweet, supple qualities of the grape
November 27, 2017
This classically made Sangiovese displayed deep aromas of fruit that had a good amount of earth and a tiny hint of oak. The aroma was very strong and inviting and provided a good sense of the rich qualities of the wine. From the first taste it was clear that this wine was made in the old-world style and was not over-oaked, it gave a simple expression of Sangiovese that was likely not completely open when we first arrived at the restaurant ( we had decanted it for 50 minutes).
After another 30 minutes or so, a few forward tannins started to emerge along with some good, ripe fruit and a touch of oak. These qualities however, only lingered in the front and middle pallet, never fully extending to the back. While it is debatable if this wine was truly open, overall it was not an overpowering wine, but a good expression of the terrior and supple, sweet qualities of the Sangiovese grape.
The wine is 100% Sangiovese and and derived from vineyards straddling the border between Chianti Classico and the Chianti Colli Senesi denomination. The wine is fermented in both stainless steel for 16-20 days and then in new and first used French oak barrels; after 18-22 months of maturation, the final blend is assembled, bottled, and aged in glass fora minimum of 8-12 months.
This full to medium bodied wine can be obtained from many fine wine retailers, but I have purchased my bottle from Zachy's. I paid approximately $55/btl, and I suspect the wine can be found in many fine wine stores at or near that price.
