Mix 36 - Castello di Fonterutoli (Mazzei) - (Sangiovese) 2012
A light to medium body Sangiovese that is consistent and easily paired with food
September 17, 2017
This beautiful dark ruby Sangiovese gave off a sweet fruity aroma that also seemed spicy and peppery. This Mazzei creation had a healthy fruity open to it that was also dry, with the front pallet opening nicely and expanding to the middle and back pallets. As it opened the wine developed some tannin's, which also became more noticeable over the evening. This combination of 36 distinct, biodynamic types of Sangiovese (18 from old vines) blended well to create an old-world styled wine. This was certainly welcomed by this reviewer, but was surprising considering the wine was fermented in French oak barrels for 20 months. Admittedly, these French barrels were 500 liters, but still, there was no hint of oak either on the nose or in the body of this fine wine. The wine was very well balanced, as evidenced by its consistency.
This light to medium bodied wine paired well with Italian food and perhaps also tasted better considering it is on sale for $32.50 at Zachy’s. Normally, it retails in excess of $60/btl.
