Built in what looks like an old movie theater is a nicely decorated restaurant that has a more modern flare to it rather than just a classic New England style. Family pictures of the chef/owner adorn the walls, which periodically change, a very nice touch. The noise level was also quite moderate despite the space being nearly full when we arrived. The bar area is woven into the dining area and was very inviting. The bar seems to double as added dining space as most of the patrons at the bar were eating. This might also explain the moderate noise level. From the dining room and bar there is a nice view of the kitchen, which seemed very clean and well organized.
The service was very friendly, with our server claiming to recognizing us from the last time we were there, which was nearly 7 months prior. Our waiter also had opinions about the food, which we found very helpful. Overall I think we found the wait staff to be well organized and well trained; the food was served in an orderly fashion and plates were cleared in a similar manner. Absent was any sense of being rushed. Later we found out that the kitchen likes to close around 9:30, which is likely not unusual for a small New England town, although we did dine on a Sunday.
We started with six oysters, which were chosen from a nice selection. We thought the Ichabod oysters from Massachusetts in particular were very flavorful. My wife had the warm mushroom salad with baby arugula, bacon, goat cheese and a truffle vinaigrette. The salad was well balanced and very tasty; how can anything with bacon and truffle in it be bad? I had the New England clam chowder, which was very flavorful and did not have to rely on a heavy cream sauce. It was nicely presented as well. For a main course my wife had Chicken Scarpariello, which came as two big pieces of chicken served moist and juicy in a spicy but light sauce, with sausage and peppers. It was excellent. I had the salmon, also perfectly cooked, tender and with a nice summer corn succotash, tasso ham in a ginger butter sauce.
For dessert we shared carrot cake which was moist and flavorful. It was also served with fresh carrots that were roasted in something very good. We can't wait for our next chance to visit Liv's!
The cork fee is $20.00/btl.
