Philippe Colin - Chassagne Montrachet Les Vergers 2012
This wine is very well made, but still needs more time to fully develop
August 19, 2017
This wine was golden yellow in appearance. On the nose there was a lot of minerality, lemon and perhaps some bitterness. This was more of a medium bodied wine that was very forward and almost viscous in its approach. At this stage in the wine's development it seemed almost awkward, like it was still developing. The fruit and minerality was concentrated in the front and middle palate, and it had a very fast finish.
After some decanting, the wine displayed broader lemon and fruit tones that were clearly more developed than first appeared. The wine was also much fuller in body, with an almost thick fruit and minerality developing into a velvet creamy texture that is very reminiscent of Chassagne Montrachet. The initial aggressiveness and tart qualities receded and it became much more balanced with the richness of its fruit. Still, the finish was a bit fast for this quality of wine.
This is certainly a wine that takes some development and/or decanting prior to consumption. I retasted this wine on September 10, 2017, where the wine still showed some hesitancy in its development even after decanting. Still, a fine quality wine that is evolving in the bottle. I estimate it has another 1 - 3 years in the bottle before it reaches its peak development.
Where to Buy It:
Sterling Cellars
Cost $69.99/bottle.
