A welcome seafood addition to Gramercy that is also largely a farm-to-table restaurant
August 26, 2017
This sister restaurant to the original Famer & The Fish restaurant, which is located in North Salem NY, has brought a seafood dominated menu to Gramercy NY. This farm-to-table establishment has a spacious bar area that is largely open to the rest of the restaurant, with the exception of a back-room area that is likely quieter. This back-room can seat 50 at the most and likely can be rented out for private parties. The décor is similar to the upstate restaurant, with its black and white theme, marble-topped tables, crystal chandeliers and back and white tiled floor. Overall a very clean and sleek look that fits right in its Flatiron neighborhood.
When we were dining it was relatively quiet, but we understood it can get noisy at happy hour during the week. The tables had generous spacing as compared with its sister restaurant, but the lack of table cloths will likely add to the noise level during busy times. The staff were quite knowledgeable and provided good service. Our waiter has been with the restaurant since it opened almost one year ago. Food presentation was well done and the tables were well cleaned between courses.
We started our meal with a half dozen west-coast oysters, although the menu offered a very broad selection of both east and west coast oysters to select from. We thought our west coast oysters were both flavorful and well prepared. My wife started with the grilled octopus that was served with a mustard sauce and crispy potatoes both of which complemented the octopus nicely. The octopus was perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. I had the scallops, which were very fresh. The scallops were served on top of a green salad with one egg, accompanied with fried potatoes and some bacon bits, all very complementary. For a main course I had the halibut, which had a crisp top with a tender and moist texture to it. It was served atop a pesto sauce that had rice and peas, aldo very good. My wife had the black sea bass, which was served over a bed of cous cous with tomatoes and greens. The fish was nicely cooked and complimented by the fresh vegetables. For desert, I had the key lime tart, which had the texture of a custard, and was very rich, sweet and flavorful. My wife had the home made chocolate ice cream, that had little chocolate chips in it, it too was very rich.
Rating TBD, corkage $25/Bottle.
