Siepi 2010 - Mazzei
This top-end Sangiovese/Merlot blend was another classic from Mazzei
May 21, 2017
This red was very dark in color, almost inky in appearance. As I did not decant this wine, it took a bit of time for it show its classically sweet earthy tones, which are indicative of both Sangiovese and Merlot. I particularly like this kind of blend as these two grapes complement one another much more so than blends of Sangiovese and Cabernet. A good amount of fruit eventually showed up on the front and middle palates along with a modest amount of tannin on the back end. While this wine was well structured and balanced, it did lack the power and expression I remembered this particular wine showing in different vintages. Considering the solid reputation of the winemaker and the high quality of the 2010 vintage, I am going to give this wine a somewhat higher rating than I might normally have had this been my first bottle of Siepe. The wine was 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot. CW 90+.

July 30, 2017 Update:
I retasted this wine recently to see if my last experience would improve. Frankly, I felt my May 2017 tasting should have scored much higher than it did. This time my wife and I were not disappointed. The wine had the same inky appearance but had a much more aromatic nose to it. The bouquet this time was rich with earthy tones that also took on a sweeter fruit tone, no doubt the Sangiovese. The flavor was very expressive this time, with a good amount of fruit and tannin, largely on the front and middle palate. I felt that the Sangiovese and Merlot were wrapping the tannin in a very flavorful package. The wine was well balanced between its expressiveness, flavor and aroma. Overall a much better showing than May and now largely in line with what I would have expected from Mazzei. The rating climes to CW 91+
